“Why Would She Do That?”
There is a question that comes easily when we are standing on the outside of someone else’s life.
Why would she do that?
Why doesn’t she leave? Why did she go back? Why does she continue making choices that seem to hurt her? Why can’t she see what everyone around her can see?
From the outside, the answer can sometimes seem painfully obvious. But at Amadea, we have learned that behavior rarely tells the whole story.
The women we serve come to us carrying stories shaped over years, sometimes decades. There are wounds we can see and many more we cannot. There may be fear, trauma, unhealthy relationships, learned patterns, shame, or ways of surviving that were formed long before we ever entered her story.
When we only look at the behavior in front of us, it can be very easy to make assumptions about the heart behind it.
And sometimes judgment doesn’t even sound like judgment.
Sometimes it sounds like concern.
I want better for her.
I know she’s capable of more than this.
I don’t understand why she keeps doing this.
Those thoughts can come from genuine love. There are times when we know a decision isn’t healthy, and loving someone doesn’t mean pretending otherwise. But there is a difference between recognizing an unhealthy choice and deciding what that choice says about someone’s heart.
First Samuel 16:7 reminds us, “Man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”
We see the decision. God sees everything that led to it.
We see that she went back. God sees everything that made leaving complicated.
We see anger, resistance, or another step backward. God sees the wounds, fears, and battles underneath what is visible to us.
That doesn’t mean every choice is healthy or that consequences don’t matter. It simply reminds us of our place.
We are not the author of her story. We are not the judge of her heart. And we are certainly not her Savior.
Our role is to love her well while continually pointing her to the One who is.
That changes the questions we ask.
Instead of only asking, “Why would she do that?” perhaps we begin asking, What might she be carrying that I cannot see? What has she learned to believe about herself? What is she afraid of? What might help her feel safe enough to take the next healthy step?
And most importantly:
Lord, help me see her the way You do.
Healing rarely happens according to someone else’s favored timeline. There may be tremendous progress followed by a step backward. A woman may understand a truth long before she is ready to live differently. Something that looks like a very small step to us may have required enormous courage on her part.
God knows what that step cost.
And He is not in a hurry with His daughters.
At Amadea, we want women to know they don’t have to perform healing for our approval. We want them to experience a community where they can be known without being exposed, guided without being controlled, corrected without being condemned, and loved without having to earn it.
Because that is how our Father loves us, and before she is anything else, she is His beloved daughter.
