You Can’t Pull a Flower Open

Have you ever watched a flower begin to bloom?

A tightly closed bud slowly opens. Day after day, the petals unfold until, one morning, without our noticing, a beautiful flower appears where only a small bud had been.

But no matter how excited we are to see that flower bloom, we cannot hurry the process by pulling the petals apart.

We can give it sunlight. We can water it, tend the soil, and protect it from what might harm it. We can do everything we can to create an environment where it can flourish.

But we cannot make it bloom.

When we love someone, especially someone who is finding her way through a difficult season, it’s natural to want to see her flourish. We recognize gifts and possibilities she may not yet recognize in herself. We can imagine the joy and freedom waiting for her, and sometimes we wish we could help her get there just a little faster.

But hearts don’t unfold according to our timelines.

Just like that budding flower, it can take time. A woman begins to trust someone. She tries something unfamiliar. She makes a different decision than she would have made a month ago. She discovers that she can learn a new skill or accomplish something she once believed was beyond her ability.

These moments may seem small, but so much is often happening beneath the surface.

In 1 Corinthians 3:6–7, Paul reminds us that while one person plants and another waters, it is God who gives the growth.

That reminder comforts me.

At Amadea, we have the privilege of planting and watering. We can provide encouragement, meaningful employment opportunities, practical training, a safe environment, and relationships rooted in love and respect. We can celebrate progress and stay present through seasons when progress is hard to see.

But the deepest work of restoration belongs to God.

Remembering that changes how we walk alongside one another.

We become a little more patient. A little more willing to recognize the beauty of an unfinished process. A little less concerned with how quickly someone reaches a particular milestone and a little more grateful for the opportunity to be part of her journey.

There are places in our own lives where we are still growing. Prayers we are waiting to see answered. Habits we are learning to change. Truths we are slowly learning to believe. And aren’t we grateful that God doesn’t grow impatient with us because we haven’t yet become everything He is creating us to be?

He continues tending the garden.

At Amadea, we want to create an environment where women are encouraged to grow without feeling pressured to bloom before they are ready. A place where they are valued in every season, not just when their progress is visible to the world.

Because a flower is no less precious as a bud.

And a woman is no less worthy of love while her story is still unfolding.
